The Federal Government, Virtual Worlds and Emvee

•May 1, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I was in Washington DC last week, for the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds. The gathering was small, with representatives from all aspects of Government. Taking place at the National Defense University, Contractors, State level and Federal organizations within government gathered to better understand Virtual Spaces, what they can offer, and how inter-government agencies can work with the three dimensional web as it develops further. I have to say that I was remarkably impressed with the knowledge and understanding of our appointed and elected officials and their comprehension of what these spaces can be used for. Organizations stretching from the National Security Agency, The National Guard, The Army, The US Department of Justice, The Department of Homeland Security all attended, and the list goes on and on.
I had the pleasure of being part of a discussion group that discussed Governance, policy and enforcement, which enabled us to put both Government and Commercial needs on the table, discuss the future of virtual spaces and how we can all help make these needs known. It was kind of amazing, I feel like I watched the birth of a group of people who were discussing lobbying for web 3.0, or whatever you want to call it, as a matter of both invention, principle and need. I was surprised that we were discussing the potential and issues with platforms like Second Life, and by the end of a single meeting, had come up with a date to put together a lobbying group. I was shocked that the Federal government was so efficient in organizing quickly and efficiently, and am looking forward to taking part of this group to which I’ve been invited.

I was however surprised at the lack of Federal Law enforcement agencies that were there, considering the amount of laws that are being violated or challenged within Virtual Worlds. Oddly enough I ran into an FBI agent at the airport at the bar on the way home to San Francisco, whose job it was to find people online for whatever he was looking for. He had never heard of Second Life. Are they not aware of the happenings online? Is Government not involved in governance and should they be? How can we help them prevent violation of law if they don’t even know about what happens there? A paper I’m writing and doing research for has led me to be able to find all sorts of illegal things on the internet but those are monitored on the web right? Why aren’t virtual spaces? They seriously need our help.

As always when it comes to Metaversatility’s specialty, there were no signs of other virtual world builders or content development companies there, including what some would consider the big two, (who will remain nameless) and while they draw up business, remain non-cutting edge. What does this mean for Metaversatility? Well, considering my experience in Governance that was developed while working at Linden Lab, Emvee has been poised to have some serious say in the way that these lobbying groups and organizations learn to utilize virtual spaces, and we are ramping up to do so. Wish us luck and if you’d like to help, please feel free to contact us.

•April 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Their press release went out recently and I, your editor, missed it 😦 Sorry Derek and Elissa, you’ve done a lot for this blog with your posts on Social Networking and their flaws and expected downfalls.

However, good news is here! Quillpill has launched. Click here for the link to the press release:

“Quillpill takes its cue from Asia and Europe where m-business and m-publishing is already happening,” said Derek Maune, CEO, at Quillpill. “We’re poised to be at the forefront in the U.S. for this steady increase in mobile web usage.”

Give it a shot, you can write a book right from your mobile phone, using a Twitter-like interface for sentences. With a growing number of features, Quillpill is bound to be a major player in both the shrinking literature and the growing mobile market.

I’ve Had It With WikiFascists

•April 16, 2008 • 3 Comments

Wikipedia has now gone too far and taken down my band for not being notable. How dare they!
The Red Hot Reiner Peppers, the only Live Midi Band in existence, according to Wikipedia, isn’t notable?

This time Wikipedia has lost it. Early today, one of our fans, Charles, posted our information to Wikipedia for us, here’s a screen shot of the post:
Photobucket
…and yes, the WikiFascists took it down. Twice! How can they say we aren’t notable? Our lead, Jesse Reiner of Chrime in Choir fame, is in 9 different bands! Keyboardist Tom Verre is an artist who is listed as tied for Number One Favorite artist in 1990 in the Comic Almanac right next to Charles Vess! And of course, myself, notable and world famous Valleywag Mascot and Harbinger of Virtual Spaces World Wide?
NOT NOTABLE?

Wikifascists, this is for you… because YOU wikipedia, are seriously challenging my concept on loving everyone.

Metaversatility Blogs Jon Stewarts Second Life Congress Satire

•April 9, 2008 • Leave a Comment

If you haven’t had the chance to see The Daily Show’s Second Life coverage of Philip Rosedale’s hearing in front of congress, Metaversatility has put it up on our blog along with a report from Ronnie Musgrove, which is incorrect. He refers to Susan Tenby in a black suit who works for Linden Lab which is not true, she works for TechSoup.
Sad when the Daily show delivers better news than The New York Times.

Titanic Virtually Unreal

I’ve just been given a demo of a Virtual Space by Joe Rigby of Mellanium Studios, where they’ve created a live scale replica of the Titanic using the Unreal 2 engine and roughly 850,000 polygons. It’s quite impressive. Check it out, more info after the Video.

Mellanium looks to be creating Serious games, and focused on education based games, and their work seems to be really good. They claim to be able to put roughly 40 avatars on a private server or up to hundreds on a global server. For more video’s of Mellaniums work, go to their YouTube Channel, located here. Thanks for the tour Joe.

Virtual Worlds Con New York 2008 Recap

•April 6, 2008 • 4 Comments

Virtual Worlds are becoming more widely known, both to the mass consumer market and the game industry alike. The Virtual Worlds Con NY was held this past weekend, April 3-4, and it was apparent that widespread interest was starting to infect the VW industry. Metaversatility did shoot some photos of our team and friends brandishing our Tat-schwag, which you can see by clicking here, on Flickr. We had some meetings, lined up some business, and defined ourselves yet again as being one of the most influential, fun, down to earth, professional and talented Content Developers of Virtual Worlds.

So takeaways? Well, Simple:
Since my induction into the Association of Virtual Worlds Advisory Board, I’ve started leading the charge to helping spread awareness of Virtual Worlds, and the future of the three dimensional internet. You can’t see the Avatars in the chairs in this photo, they don’t render on regular film, but the response has been amazing:

Where is most of the focus at with Virtual Worlds? Seems to be the kids and tweens market is currently driving attention to our industry. That’s where the money is at, according to Mattel, MTV, and others.
Not to mention Habbo Hotel has the best Schwag, pillows:

I even broke a few VW scoops myself:
About Hiro,
About Joshua,
and about MV CEO Peter Haik.

Made a new friend who does research in Governance, Griefers and hackers on the internet, a personal interest of mine after Linden.

Oh, and I found my mom:
